KENYAN MP WANTED BY THE US AFTER FAILING TO SERVE HIS PRISON SENTENCE

May 19, 2019 | Jimmie Kariuki

A Kenyan Member of Parliament might be on the US Feds’ radar after it emerged that he did not complete his prison sentence while in the country.

Fafi Member of Parliament Abdikarim Osman Mohammed who is serving his first term as Member of Parliament is being sought after by the US Authorities who want him extradited back to the US so he can finish his prison term over a Tax Evasion indictment charge he was sentenced for while in the US back in 2015.

According to American Media outlets, Abdikarim was sentenced to 118 months in Federal Custody after he was found guilty of 32 indictment charges relating to Tax evasion.

The KANU MP is said to have assisted in the filing of false Tax returns and abetted tax repayment worth over $600,000 (60 Million shillings).

Court documents also reveal that the US Internal Revenue Service conducted three different undercover missions out of which they caught the businessman evading taxes through false filing of returns.

The IRS in court papers claimed that they sent undercover officers who posed as clients that needed to be helped to come up with fake Federal Income Tax Returns for the year 2007.

Abdikarim is said to have prepared the tax returns for his ‘clients’ and reduced the taxes in all the three cases leading to tax fraud on his side.

Abdikarim was then sentenced and entered into a plea bargain deal with the Feds selling out his accomplice Yahya Sheikh who was sentenced to 10 years in Prison.

He was however sentenced to a reduced sentence of 18 months in Federal Custody due to the plea bargain agreement between him and the Feds.

It is not clear how the Member of Parliament managed to escape the sentence and returned back into the country.

A report by Daily Nation indicates that the reason the MP declined to visit the US with the Energy Committee in which he serves as a member in April 2019 was that he was afraid that the Feds could have arrested him.

The Member of Parliament could not be reached for comment with his office claiming that he was away on some celebrations in Somaliland.
